Never the Same Dive Twice – Diving at the Vancouver Aquarium
A sanctuary in the heart of Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium, an Ocean Wise initiative, is home to thousands of incredible ocean species and amazing aquatic life. It’s also Ocean Wise headquarters, where our scientists, educators and conservation experts do their work, not only to protect our oceans but to inspire others to join us in our mission. Since opening in 1956, the Vancouver Aquarium has connected more than 40 million people from around the world to our oceans and all the wonders within them.
Diving at one of the world’s most popular Aquariums presents a number of interesting logistical, training and regulatory challenges. Participating in tasks ranging from educating visitors about sustainable seafood to conducting primary scientific research to maintaining healthy habitats for specimens, Ocean Wise divers undertake over 1000 diving operations every year at the Aquarium, in local BC waters and in Canada’s Arctic.
Learn about the status of the scientific diving standard in British Columbia and how it integrates with local legislation and Aquarium diving operations. As well, find out more about the types of diving undertaken by Ocean Wise divers, and about some of the equipment and techniques that have been developed to fulfil our mission to inspire the global community to increase its understanding, wonder and appreciation for our oceans.
