Hornby Island Weekend Getaway

During this 2 day trip, we’ll spend the first day doing a couple of shore dives in Nanoose Bay (Madrona or Tyee), the second day we will do 2 boat dives at Hornby Island and the surrounding area where you will have the possibility of seeing a diverse amount of large animals including sea lions, wolf eels, giant Pacific octopus and much more! You’ll be guided by one of our friendly PADI Professionals on two boat dives exploring sites such as Hornby Island, Norris Rocks and Flora Islet.

It is possible we will be visited underwater by several Stellar and/or Californian Sea Lions during our dives. We follow all marine mammal guidelines put in place by DFO, and do our best to keep our distance, but Sea Lions can often be curious and want to swim by and check us out. A thorough safety briefing will be given prior to the dives on what to expect, and what to do/not to do when approached by a Sea Lion.

Don’t have a buddy? Not to worry! Most of our divers come alone, so we’ll buddy you up with someone of similar skill level to make sure you both have the best dive possible!

Trip Itinerary

Our Hornby Island Trips typically meet at 7am to catch the 8:30 ferry.

If you are renting gear, you will need to make sure we have your sizing ahead of time, as we pack the bags beforehand, and there is not a lot of time in the morning. After gear bags are checked, we’ll load up the vans and head to Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal (40 Mins). The ferry ride to Nanaimo is roughly 1 Hour and 40 minutes. From there we will drive to Nanoose Bay where we will do a couple of shore dives, before making our way to our hotel in Courtenay.

The next day we will meet our boat at the marina and head to Hornby Island! We’ll be doing two dives with a nice hot chocolate break in-between. We’ll plan on catching the 5:55pm ferry back to Vancouver, which should put us back at the Diving Locker between 8 – 8:30pm (depending on traffic)

Diving in BC - Drysuit Training

Cold water diving is fun! but being cold while diving is not! There are two kinds of suits that can be used while diving here in BC:

Wetsuits (July – September): The wetsuits we use here are a two piece 7mm farmer john/jacket style wetsuit. Wetsuits keep you warm by trapping a layer of water between your skin and the suit. Your body heats up the water and the neoprene acts as an insulator to keep it warm. Because of the way wetsuits work, it is important that they fit you properly (tight!).

Drysuits: Drysuits keep you dry but what you where underneath of them is what keeps you warm. The drysuits we use are made of a trilaminate material that have a latex seal around your neck and wrists, and built in boots. You’ll need to wear warm layers underneath such as fleece, wool, etc. in order to stay warm.

The water can be quite chilly here, especially between October – June, during these months we require our divers to be in a drysuit, however the rest of the months it is your choice!

In order to dive in a drysuit, you will need to either have completed drysuit training with us previously, or complete the PADI Drysuit Specialty Course (this includes one evening pool training, as well as 2 ocean dives, completed over one day )

Where to Meet

All of our Dive Classes and Trips meet at the Diving Locker (unless you’ve arranged to meet us at the dive site)

We are located at 2745 West 4th Ave. (cross street is Macdonald). There is plenty of street parking on 3rd and 2nd which works best if you are planning on leaving your vehicle here for the day.

We also have a few temporary parking spots in the alley behind the store if you are wanting to load/unload gear.

Cancellation Policy / Trip Insurance

Cancellations:
We do not offer refunds on any trips. Trips may be transferred to another person or under special circumstances can be used towards in-store credit. In most cases late cancellation leads to forfeiting of the amount paid towards the trip, unless we are able to fill your spot.

The cancellation policy varies depending on trip, please refer to our full policy here

Trip & Dive Insurance

We also encourage all of our divers to make sure they have adequate dive/health/travel insurance to cover their needs. Including potential dive accidents, trip cancellation, etc.

It is a good idea to check/review any coverage you may already have in place.

Note: Some travel/premium credit cards include things like travel/trip cancellation insurance, so You may already have some travel/trip cancellation insurance through your credit card company.

DIVE TRIP FAQ

Most Frequently Asked Questions

If you don’t own your own gear, you will need to rent for your dives. We offer different rental packages, or you can rent by the piece if you only need a few items.

You will require:

  • Drysuit or 7mm 2-pc. Wetsuit (May-September)
  • BCD
  • Regulator (w/ drysuit hose if using a drysuit)
  • 5mm Boots (or thicker)
  • 5mm Gloves (or thicker)
  • 5mm Hood (or thicker)
  • Tanks and Weights are included on all of our trips

Strongly recommend:

  • Dive Light (depending on the time of year, our water can sometimes be quite dark)
  • Dive Computer

Drysuit is definitely the preferred way to dive here in BC, however a wetsuit can be comfortably used between the months of May – September. If you are interested in learning to dive in a drysuit, check out our PADI Drysuit Specialty!

We have some of the worlds most beautiful diving, and it’s right on our back door step! Our water temperature ranges from 4°C – 9°C. In the summer months it is very comfortable to dive in a wetsuit (7mm John/Jacket), and during winter most people make the transition over to a dry suit. We dive all year round, and the visibility can vary quite a bit depending on the time of year. During the summer months we usually experience run off and plankton/algae blooms which can affect the visibility, so typically the fall-winter months are the best time to dive.

We have some of the most diverse marine life that you will ever see! We have a very large amount of invertebrates such as sea stars, sea cucumbers, nudibranchs, and more! We also have a huge variety of fish ranging from tiny Gobies, to Rockfish, to 5 ft Lingcod! Our most popular underwater friends are our world-renowned Giant Pacific Octopus. If you’re lucky, you may also catch a glimpse of a Wolf Eel, or get buzzed by a Seal or Sea Lion!
