DIVING LOCAL

Drysuit or Wetsuit?

What's The Difference?

Cold water diving is fun! but being cold while diving is not! There are two kinds of suits that can be used while diving here in BC:

Beginner Dive Course, Vancouver Diving Locker, Canada

Wetsuits

The wetsuits we use here are a two piece 7mm farmer john/jacket style wetsuit. Wetsuits keep you warm by trapping a layer of water between your skin and the suit. Your body heats up the water and the neoprene acts as an insulator to keep it warm. Because of the way wetsuits work, it is important that they fit you properly (tight!).

Drysuits

Drysuits keep you dry but what you wear underneath of them is what keeps you warm. The drysuits we use are made of a trilaminate material that have a latex seal around your neck and wrists, and built in boots. You’ll need to wear warm layers underneath such as fleece, wool, etc. in order to stay warm.

Drysuit Training

In order to dive in a drysuit, you will need to complete some additional pool training, which will teach you how to use a drysuit in a confined water setting, and how to handle the changes in buoyancy. These are scheduled weekly and can be completed after your class/pool sessions.

The water can be quite chilly here, especially between October – June, during these months we require our divers to be in a drysuit, however the rest of the months it is your choice!

Thinking of completing your dives in a wetsuit?

Summer is our busiest time of the year, and our weekend ocean dives fill up very quickly! This means that we may have limited availability for you to complete your ocean dives within our wetsuit season (July  – September).

Please keep in mind that depending on when we are able to schedule your ocean dives, you may need to add on the drysuit upgrade.

Dive Insurance:
If you are planning on traveling outside Canada to do any diving, we highly recommend purchasing dive insurance. Many travel insurance providers do not cover scuba diving, and although a dive accident is unlikely, it could end up being quite costly if something were to happen. We work with Dive Assure, who offers affordable Dive & Travel Insurance for both single and multiple trips.

Important: Please Review the PADI Medical Questionnaire

In order to begin your course, you must be able to successfully complete a PADI Medical Questionnaire. In some cases, clearance by a physician may be necessary. If you require medical clearance, this will need to be obtained before you can begin your course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience to start scuba diving?

No experience is required. Our Open Water Course is designed for complete beginners. We start in a controlled environment where you’ll learn the basics before progressing to open water dives.

You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable in the water. The course includes a basic swim test (200m) and a short float (10 mins) to ensure you’re safe and confident in the water.

Most students complete their certification over two weeks, but we offer flexible evening, daytime, weekend and private courses, so you can fit the training around your schedule.

Yes! when done properly, scuba diving is very safe. In this course, you’ll learn essential safety skills, how to use your equipment, and how to dive within your limits under the guidance of a certified instructor.

Training dives are conducted in local Vancouver-area dive sites such as Whyteclliff Park and Porteau Cove, known for easy access and incredible marine life.

Your Course will include:

  • Knowledge development (via PADI E-Learning)
  • Confined water (pool) training
  • Open water ocean dives
  • All Scuba Gear (except Mask & Snorkel)
  • Transportation
  • Certification upon successful completion

Vancouver’s cold waters are full of life! During your dives, you may encounter:

  • Starfish
  • Rockfish and lingcod
  • Octopus
  • Crabs
  • Nudibranchs
  • Seals/Sea Lions
  • Much much more!

Every dive is different, which makes learning here especially exciting!

Before starting your course, you’ll need to pick up your own Mask and Snorkel (you’ll receive a 15% student discount on your purchase). All other essential scuba gear is provided for your training.

If you decide to continue diving, we’re happy to help you choose equipment that fits you properly!

That’s completely normal! Many students feel the same way at first. Our instructors take things step-by-step, ensuring you’re comfortable before moving forward. You’ll never be rushed, and if you find you’re not quite ready to move on, we are happy to work with you to make sure you get the extra time and attention you need.

Once you are a certified diver, you can dive anywhere in the world up to 18 metres (60 feet).

Many divers continue on to complete their PADI Advanced course, join us on local or tropical dive trips, or even specialty training.
