DIVING LOCAL

Drysuit or Wetsuit?

What's The Difference?

Cold water diving is fun! but being cold while diving is not! There are two kinds of suits that can be used while diving here in BC:

Wetsuits

The wetsuits we use here are a two piece 7mm farmer john/jacket style wetsuit. Wetsuits keep you warm by trapping a layer of water between your skin and the suit. Your body heats up the water and the neoprene acts as an insulator to keep it warm. Because of the way wetsuits work, it is important that they fit you properly (tight!).

Drysuits

Drysuits keep you dry but what you wear underneath of them is what keeps you warm. The drysuits we use are made of a trilaminate material that have a latex seal around your neck and wrists, and built in boots. You’ll need to wear warm layers underneath such as fleece, wool, etc. in order to stay warm.

Drysuit Training

In order to dive in a drysuit, you will need to complete some additional pool training, which will teach you how to use a drysuit in a confined water setting, and how to handle the changes in buoyancy. These are scheduled weekly and can be completed after your class/pool sessions.

The water can be quite chilly here, especially between October – June, during these months we require our divers to be in a drysuit, however the rest of the months it is your choice!

Thinking of completing your dives in a wetsuit?

Summer is our busiest time of the year, and our weekend ocean dives fill up very quickly! This means that we may have limited availability for you to complete your ocean dives within our wetsuit season (July  – September).

Please keep in mind that depending on when we are able to schedule your ocean dives, you may need to add on the drysuit upgrade.

TROPICAL REFERRAL

Rather Dive Somewhere Warm?

All Courses Options are Available as a Tropical Referral - Which means you can complete all of your class and pool work here with us, and your finish your ocean dives at any PADI Dive Shop in the world! (Dives must be completed within 12 months)

Evening Referral $619.95 | Weekend & Daytime Referral $669.95 | Private Fast Track $799.95 pp (2ppl) or $899.95 (1 person)

Dive Insurance:
If you are planning on traveling outside Canada to do any diving, we highly recommend purchasing dive insurance. Many travel insurance providers do not cover scuba diving, and although a dive accident is unlikely, it could end up being quite costly if something were to happen. We work with Dive Assure, who offers affordable Dive & Travel Insurance for both single and multiple trips.

Important: Please Review the PADI Medical Questionnaire

Frequently Asked Questions

You can complete your certification in as little as 3 days, or as long as 1 year. We offer four different options to fit everybody’s schedule!

Evenings: 5 evenings of class/pool and one weekend in the ocean. This option is great for those who work shift-work, or who have a very chaotic schedule. The schedule is incredibly flexible and can be completed in as little as 2 weeks or as long as 1 year.

Weekends: This course takes place over 2 weekends, the first being class/pool and the second weekend is your ocean dives. This option is a faster paced course in a more intimate setting (usually 4 students per class).

Daytime: Similar to the Weekend option, but this will take place over Monday/Tuesday, 2 weeks in a row.

Private Fast Track: This option works well for people who are visiting from out of town, or those who are on a tight time frame. The course is completed privately with an instructor over just three days, one day of class/pool and two days in the ocean.

If you have an appetite for excitement and adventure, odds are you can become an avid PADI scuba diver. You’ll also want to keep in mind these prerequisites:

  • Minimum Age: 10 years old (please read important information about kids ages 10-18)
  • Complete a PADI Medical Questionnaire
  • Swim 200m without stopping
  • Float/Tread water for 10 minutes

When you start learning to scuba dive, as a minimum, you’ll want your own Mask and Snorkel

During your PADI Open Water Diver course, you’ll be using a variety of equipment including:

  • Regulator
  • Buoyancy Control Device (BCD)
  • Dive computer or dive planner
  • Scuba tank
  • 7mm Wetsuit (June-September only) or Drysuit
  • 7mm Neoprene Boots
  • 5mm Neoprene Gloves
  • 7mm Neoprene Hood
  • Weight system.

You may want to consider investing in all your own scuba equipment when you start your course because you’re more comfortable learning to scuba dive using gear that is fitted for you and that you’ve chosen. Having your own scuba diving gear is part of the fun of diving!

Classroom Sessions: All of the classroom sessions take place at The Diving Locker.

Pool Sessions: Most of our pool sessions are held at either UBC Aquatic Center or Lord Bying. We have a pool in Tsawwassen that is sometimes used when the other two are unavailable. Don’t have a vehicle? No problem! We have three passenger vans that will get you everywhere you need to go during your course.

Ocean Dives: Typically the first day of your Open Water dives, we will go to Whytecliff Park, which is located in Horseshoe Bay. For the second day we try to go to Porteau Cove (weather dependant) which is closer to Squamish. The morning of your ocean dives, you will meet at the Diving Locker first to check gear, and then we head out to the site together.

We have some of the worlds most beautiful diving, and it’s right on our back door step! Our water is home to some of the most magnificent creatures, and we guarantee you it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before! Once you develop a keen eye for spotting critters, you’ll be amazed at how much diversity we have in our waters. We have everything from tiny nudibranchs and Giant Pacific Octopus, to Stellar Sea Lions! You never know what you are going to see!

Our water temperature ranges from 4°C – 9°C. In the summer months (May-September) it is very comfortable to dive in a wetsuit (7mm John/Jacket), and during winter most people make the transition over to a dry suit. We dive all year round, and the visibility can vary quite a bit depending on the time of year. During the summer months we usually experience run off and plankton/algae blooms which can affect the visibility, so typically the fall-winter months are the best time to dive.
