Choosing the Right Drysuit This Winter

With diving conditions approaching their peak this winter season, having the right type of drysuit is integral. But when there are so many drysuits on the market, how do you know which one is going to best suit your needs? Here’s a breakdown on the top drysuits including their pros and cons.

Trilaminate Drysuits

Trilaminate drysuits are made of three layers, including a tough outer layer, a waterproof middle layer, and a comfortable inner layer. They are quite flexible and less bulky than other types of drysuits, making them easier to move around in. We find that Trilaminate drysuits are suitable for divers who need maneuverability and do a variety of different types of dives.

Pros:

  • Highly flexible, allowing for easier movement underwater.
  • Suitable for various diving conditions due to its versatility.
  • Easier to dry and maintain due to its material.

Cons:

  • Slightly more susceptible to punctures and tears.
  • Requires heavier undergarments for insulation

Neoprene Drysuits

Neoprene drysuits are composed of a compressed neoprene material, which offers insulation. Compared to trilaminate, they are slightly less flexible but because of this, they are more durable and resistant to wear and tear. Due to their level of insulation, neoprene drysuits are ideal for divers who are diving in extremely cold conditions.

Pros:

  • Provides excellent insulation due to the material’s thickness.
  • More resilient to wear and tear due to the durability of neoprene.
  • Compressed neoprene suits are less buoyant, providing better buoyancy control on dives.

Cons:

  • Less flexibility, which might restrict movement.
  • Tends to be bulkier, making it harder to pack and transport.
